Game Changer – Oil & Gas Company of the Year (R&D) Award 2014- Special Commendation

IndianOil and LanzaTech, USA jointly bagged the PetroFed Game Changer Oil & Gas Company of the Year (R&D) Award 2014- Special Commendation. The award has been given on the path breaking, game changing, and remarkable process that recycles CO2 emissions into omega-3 rich fatty acids (like DHA) along with lipids (fatty acids relevant to Biodiesel).

Under the joint project, LanzaTech, USA developed a process to produce acetates from Carbon dioxide (CO2 spiked with Hydrogen) using their patented microbe at bench scale through Gas fermentation technology.
This low value acetate streams can be efficiently utilised by novel thraustochytrid (microalgae) strains developed at IOC-DBT Centre of IndianOil R&D to produce high value products like DHA( Docosahexaenoic acid)) along with lipids. This patented process has produced extraordinary good results. This project can be a game changer for production of oil from algae in an economically viable method as algae producing only lipids (oil) is not economically feasible anywhere in the world. Currently work is undergoing to set up an IOC-LanzaTech integrated continuous fermentation pilot plant in 2016, which shall be the first such facility in the world.

The Game changer award category was introduced for the first time by PetroFed in 2014. This Game Changer-Oil & Gas Company of the Year award recognises such path breaking, game changing initiatives undertaken by Oil and Gas Companies. The companies embarking upon path breaking initiatives can dramatically change the stature of the company by sustaining financial and operational performance, creating key differentiators and contributing to the growth of the nation.
