Centre for Advanced Bioenergy Research

This centre has fully operational India’s first multi-feed multi-chemical integrated Lignocellulosic Biomass to ethanol pilot plant. This plant has been designed and developed under collaborative agreement with National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Golden, Colorado, USA. This pilot plant is a unique state-of-the-art facility and studies different feedstock, different chemicals at different reaction conditions for pretreatment, so as to evolve a most cost effective process. The facility is being used to develop indigenous technology for India specific feed stocks like cotton stalk, rice straw, bagasse etc to further commercialize the process for bio-ethanol production. The centre is now equipped with all modern analytical and biotechnology facility e.g., Biomass characterization lab, State of art Fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis laboratory, , HPLC, GC, Gene Sequencing facility, advance molecular biology facility, Microbial Culture laboratory, 2 litre flat panel algae photo bioreactor etc. The centre is setting up 150 litre Fermenter facility for production of extracellular enzymes from fungus along with ultrafiltration facility.. The Centre is also setting us  2000 litres tubular algae photobioreactor facility at the centre along with Algal harvesting, drying and extraction facilities at the centre where both heterotrophic and autotrophic systems shall be validated and compared. All projects undertaken in the centre will culminate into pilot plant demonstration units and result in a transferable technology package for bio energy industry.
